As the clock ticks closer to New Year’s Eve, Delhi Police has ramped up security measures to ensure a safe and joyous celebration for residents and visitors alike. Nearly 15,000 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed across the national capital, reflecting a robust plan to tackle hooliganism, traffic violations, and overcrowding during the festivities.
Comprehensive Security Measures
Delhi’s status as a vibrant hub bordered by Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan attracts thousands of visitors each year for New Year Eve celebrations. To maintain public safety, specialized arrangements have been made in key areas, including:
- Connaught Place
- Khan Market
- India Gate
- Popular hotels, restaurants, and party hotspots
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla assured residents of comprehensive security protocols: “We have prepared a detailed arrangement to ensure the safety and security of all during the celebrations.”
The New Delhi district has been divided into two zones for seamless supervision:
- Zone A: Covers Parliament Street and Connaught Place, supervised by additional DCP-I.
- Zone B: Includes Chanakyapuri and Tughlak Road, overseen by additional DCP-II.
Deployment Details
To ensure optimal coverage, the deployment includes:
- Four ACPs, 23 inspectors, and 648 police staff
- 100 home guards and 11 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), including a dedicated women’s unit
- Specialized teams for bomb disposal, SWAT units, and Prakram vehicles
Traffic and Crowd Control
Traffic regulations will be strictly enforced to prevent congestion in high-footfall areas. Buses heading towards Connaught Place will be diverted from 7 PM on December 31, and exit gates at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station will close post 9 PM to avoid overcrowding.
Around 47 pickets have been set up for vehicle diversion, and police will conduct strict checks for alcohol consumption, narcotics use, and public disturbances. Entry to restricted areas will be limited to individuals with valid hotel or restaurant invitations.
Live Monitoring and Immediate Response
The DCP emphasized that CCTV live monitoring will enable rapid intervention to address any emergencies. In addition, the southwest district will deploy 27 checkpoints with breath analyzers to deter drunk driving, while 14 Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) and 16 PCR vans will remain on standby for immediate response.
Key security hubs include Hauz Khas Village, malls, and cinemas, with police ensuring vigilance at over 35 popular venues.
Traffic Advisory for Hotspots
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), DK Gupta, announced measures to manage traffic near hotspots such as Saket Mall, Ambience Mall, and Hauz Khas. “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and follow traffic rules to ensure a safe and joyous New Year Eve,” he said.
Celebrate New Year’s Eve Safely
The elaborate security and traffic management plans by Delhi Police highlight their commitment to making New Year’s Eve a memorable and safe event. Whether celebrating in the city’s vibrant party hubs or at quieter venues, residents are encouraged to cooperate with authorities and adhere to safety regulations for a smooth transition into the new year.
