China Discovers New Potentially Fatal Langya Virus

China has discovered a new virus within its borders that experts say could trigger another pandemic. The Langya Henipavirus, referred to as “Langya,” has already infected 35 people, according to Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control.

Langya is in the same family as the Hendra virus and Nipah virus. While none of the patients have died or suffered serious illness, it is a virus that hasn’t infected human beings prior to this outbreak. Therefore, there are a lot of unknowns about this virus.

What we do know is that Langya is potentially fatal and that it is spread through contact with infected animals or animal products. If you think you may have been exposed to Langya, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

At this time, there is no vaccine or treatment for Langya. However, researchers are working hard to develop both. In the meantime, the best way to prevent Langya infection is to avoid contact with infected animals or animal products.
